GUIDED BY VOICES - PROPELLER LP (Rockathon, 1992)
Only 500 ever printed up! Each cover unique and handmade!
Rare! Collectible! …and some damn fine music too.
This cover features a ballerina flying through the air, the photograph stuck over what appears to be one of the Wright brothers sitting, waiting in his airplane, before its famous first flight (see below). Top right corner, there’s a red stamp ‘Propeller’. The back cover is as shown below, and on the inside of the fold-out cardboard sleeve is a picture of an antique clock cut out into the shape of a bottle (also shown below).
The copy is in VG condition. Unlike several of the other early GbV albums I’m selling on eBay that are still in their shrink wrap, this one has been played a couple of times, and loved. There are a few surface crackles and pops, a few light smeared fingerprints – but it’s in extremely good nick. The sleeve itself has remained in a clear plastic outer sleeve throughout its life.
The vinyl has "OLD AGE NO AGE" and “AMREP TEIIEGEWES” (??) scrawled on the inner ring. AmRep being a reference to the fine Minneapolis label, home to Cows and Chokebore and Helmet, I would have thought.
I can still very clearly remember the circumstances that led up to its acquisition – and that of its companions. It was at CBGBs, New Music Seminar 1993, NYC. I’d just finished watching Guided By Voices on stage, in the company of about 15 other people – and was blown away by their sheer energy, and naïve enthusiasm for pop music. I loved the tunes. I have a very clear mental picture of Robert kicking his leg out, even now.
Afterwards I went to say hello where Mr Pollard was attempting to sell his wares at the front of house, by some rails right opposite the bar. I introduced myself, and told him I loved his band and wanted to interview them. He was overwhelmed: “I’ve waited 10 years to do an interview!” he exclaimed – and insisted on pressing into my hands a copy of EVERY single limited edition album he had on him, plus a whole bunch of handmade T-shirts. (I think I have them somewhere, if anyone’s interested.)
The interview itself the next day – in a bar round the corner from the Gramercy Park Hotel – was an absolute riot.
